St George and Scouts Celebrate a Day at Bridge House of Twyford

Jun 12, 2025 in Local

The team at Bridge House of Twyford were delighted to host the 1st Twyford Scout Group on the 25th of April, celebrating the legend of St George and Scouting heritage.

It transpires that the Bridge House association with Twyford Scouting goes back some considerable way, to a time when previous owners, the Verey family, provided a site for annual Scout camps on Bridge House land. Since the pack was established in 1910, this alliance is likely to have promoted some of the earliest Scouting activity in Twyford. The residents and team at Bridge House are thrilled to have renewed an association with such a wonderful group of young people and their leaders.

The St George’s Day event was packed with activities that perfectly aligned the tradition of St George with modern Scouting. Fun-filled demonstrations showcased some of the Scouts’ many skills — from archery, ballista building, and even a session including stocks and sponges. The latter was much appreciated (by some), as the event was blessed with beautiful weather.

Guests were fuelled by a fabulous BBQ and sumptuous Bridge House cream tea, before finishing proceedings with a traditional campfire. Stories and songs led by the Scouting guests were much enjoyed by residents, families, and the team, who all agreed it was the perfect ending to a memorable day.

Everyone was able to take something from the experience — be it the feel-good factor or a new skill learned. The collaboration demonstrated just how important it is to mix generations and the experiences of others. £200 was also raised at the event, which will be donated to Alzheimer’s Research UK. Bridge House’s Doctor, Jennifer Hay, has been fundraising for this charity throughout the year, so this is an appropriate way to recognise her wonderful work, dedication, and commitment.
